Congressional Medal of Honor

Air Force

(Army, Navy and Air Force each have Unique Medal Designs)

Only Five (5) Military Chaplains have ever received the Congressional Medal of Honor, the highest Military Decoration awarded by the United States of America. All Five (5) of those Military Chaplains were Roman Catholic Priests, ready to shed their Blood for their Comrades-in-Arms. As Members of the Body-of-Christ (Church Militant) here on Earth, you and I are called to do the same.

Jesus Christ Died in Battle

Greater Love than this no man hath, that a man lay down his Life for his Friends. (John 15:13 - Douay Rheims Bible)

Maiorem hac dilectionem nemo habet ut animam suam quis ponat pro amicis suis. (John 15:13 - Latin Vulgate Bible)

No Pain . . . . . . No Gain
Guts . . . . . . No Glory
Cross . . . . . No

Without Labor, there is no Rest,
and Without Fighting, no Victory

"O God Who heard Solomon in the Night that he Prayed for Wisdom, Hear me; I cannot Lead this People, I cannot Guide the Affairs of this Nation without Your Help. I am Poor and Weak and Sinful. O God, Who heard Solomon when he Cried to You, Hear me and Save this Nation".

Abraham Lincoln

Unless the Lord keep the city, he watcheth in vain that keepeth it".

Pray for America, as did our two greatest Presidents.
Greatness comes only from God.

Copiosa apud eum Redemptio . . .
With Him There is Plentiful Redemption

alphonsus_ligouri.jpg (5486 bytes) The motto Saint Alphonsus Ligouri chose for his beloved Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer (Redemptorist Fathers) was: "Copiosa apud eum redemptio" -- from the Latin Bible, verse 7 of Psalm 130 (the "de profundis"). With Christ there is Plentiful Redemption.

Saint Alphonsus was a voice announcing the Glad Tidings of charlie.jpg (8070 bytes) the Infinite Love of God for Humanity, especially for Sinners, at a time when Jansenism had spread a Coldness and Rigorism over so many sectors of the Church. Saint Alphonsus' Heart beat with the Heart of Christ, the Compassionate and Good Shepherd, Who leaves the ninety-nine to search out the lost one .... thus Alphonsus' commitment to preach the Gospel to "the most abandoned".

Father Charles Hergenroeder, CSSR has provided extensive assistance in compiling the many resources pertaining to Saint Alphonsus.

Our Lady of Perpetual Help is the Patroness of the Redemptorist Order founded by Saint Alphonsus. The original painting dates back to the XV Century by an unknown artist. Many Miracles are attributed to the painting which depicts the Moment when Archangels reveal to the Child Jesus the manner of His Death.

Original Miraculous Icon of Our Lady of Perpetual Help -
Artist unknown - from Church of Saint Alphonse, Rome

Our Blessed Mother seems to be looking directly at those who are viewing the image and she presents Jesus to us with her right hand, as if she wanted to convey the Salvific message of His Passion. Her tunic is red, the color virgins used at the time of Christ. Her mantle is blue, the color women who were mothers wore in Palestine. She is both Virgin and Mother. On her head there is a crown, painted into the original painting at the request of the Holy See for the many favors received through her intercession. Her mouth is small, a symbol of her silence and the depth of her contemplation. Her eyes are large, they see all our needs and invite us to ask for her help. However, they reflect the sadness that seems to permeate her Soul. That Sadness shows that she knew the Fate that awaited her Son. The letters in Greek above her head tell that she is the Mother of God.

Our Lady of Perpetual Help holds Little Jesus in her arms, He ran to her and in His flight lost a sandal. He has already seen, at that tender age, part of what would be His Destiny: the Sufferings and Terrible Death He would have to endure for our Salvation. Even though He is God, He is also Human, and His future has filled Him with Terror. The figures on either side of Jesus and Mary, the Archangels Gabriel and Michael, are carrying the Instruments of Christ's Passion.

Pope Pius IX presents Our Lady of Perpetual Help icon/painting to Redemptorists

To the right, Gabriel carries the Cross and four nails. On the left, Michael holds an Urn filled with the Gall that the Soldiers offered Jesus on the Cross, the Lance that pierced His Side, and the Reed with the Sponge. Jesus' Mother holds Him in her arms, very close to her breast at this time of Panic. In her role as Co-Redeemer she cannot spare Him that Suffering, but she can Love Him and Console Him. Jesus' little hands are in hers in order to remind us, that just as He put Himself in her hands invoking her protection, now from Heaven He places each of us mortals under the same Loving, Tender Mantel of her Maternal Protection.

Pope Pius IX gave the painting to the Redemptorist Order, not as a Gift, but as a Mission. He told them: "Make Our Mother of Perpetual Help known throughout the World". The Redemptorists embraced this command wholeheartedly by distributing reproductions of her picture and talking about her in Missions and Homilies around the World. Our Holy Father Pope John Paul II had a great devotion to Our Lady of Perpetual Help, for he declared: "I have to thank the Madonna of the Perpetual Help who has shown herself ever a perpetual help to me in difficult situations".

Your Word, Lord, stands forever

(Psalm 119:89)

God is like a brilliant Gem Stone with an Infinite Number of Facets. Two people can look at the Gem Stone from different angles and they each see a different visual presentation  of Light and Colors, yet they are both viewing the same object.

In the same way, the Infinite God appears different to many people, yet they are all experiencing the same Triune God. The Articles, Homilies, Books and Treatise's presented in this Web Site range from writings of the early Church Fathers, to Writings of modern Saints such as Alphonsus, to Articles by future Saints such as Fulton J. Sheen. It is amazing in reading these Treatises, how the Holy Spirit has allowed absolutely no contradiction  in the Church's Teachings of God's Word over the Centuries, even though we, as members of Christ's Mystical Body, may see Him with many different Eyes and Minds.

On Spiritual Reading

When we Pray we speak to God;
but when we Read, God speaks to us.

In Prayer, God hears our Petitions,
but in Reading, we listen to His Voice.

Spiritual Reading and Prayer are the Arms by which
Hell is conquered and Paradise won.

Spiritual Reading and Prayer are the arms by which Hell is conquered and Paradise won.

Saint Bernard

athanas.jpg (4959 bytes) You will not see anyone who is really striving after his advancement who is not given to Spiritual Reading. And as to him who neglects it, the fact will soon be observed by his progress.

Saint Athanasius

We cannot always have access to a Spiritual Father for Counsel in our actions, and particularly in our doubts; but Reading will abundantly supply his place by giving us Lights and Directions to escape the Illusions of the Devil and of our own Self-Love, and at the same time to submit to the Divine Will.

Saint Alphonsus

Sacred Art, such as the Perpetual Help Icon depicted above, was used for Centuries as a teaching tool, even as a Catechism. The Artist can help us to see something in a new way, or to feel the Emotion of an event Centuries before. We can use the image as a visual template to enter a scene in our Imagination and thus experience the great events of our Salvation. Thusly, this Web Site attempts to blend Sacred Art with timely Articles and Treatises on the Church's Teaching of God's Word.
